An Open Clinical Trial on the Effectiveness of Cimetidine in Acute Gastritis

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of cimetidine in the treatment of acute gastritis in comparison with antacids alone. A prospective study was conducted on the open trial basis at Kyung Hee University Hospital.
60 cases suffering from acute gastritis were divided into two groups, one for combination treated group (Cimetidine +Antacid), the other for single treated group (Antacid alone). For combination treated group cimetidine was given 400mg b.i.d. orally with antacids for 1~3 weeks.
Evaluation of the efficacy was made by two ways, one by relief of the subjective symptoms and the other by the endoscopic findings and the efficacy was assessed in 4 different levels: excellent, effective, slightly effective and not effective.
The following results were obtained.
1) Epigastric pain was completely relieved in 88.5% of the cases in combination treated group and in 78.3% of the cases in single treated group after two weeks of treatment. Also the other symptoms were improved more rapidly in combination treated group than in single treated group.
2) The ratio of excellent relief of the subjective symptoms was 76.7% in combination treated group and 60.0% in single treated group.
3) The ratio of excellent resolution of the acute gastric mucosal lesion assessed by the endoscopic finding was 80% in combination treated group and 50% in single treated group after two weeks of treatment.
4) As the untoward side reaction, 2 cases of mild constipation and 1 case of mild xerostomia were observed. However these symptoms were not severe enough to discontinue the medication.
In conclusion, cimetidine appears to be effective and safe for the treatment of patients with acute gastritis.
